Attenuation of Iron Overload Induced Liver Toxicity by Hemidesmus Indicus Root in Swiss Albino Mice

چکیده
Iron overload in liver is associated with the oxidative damage of protein, lipid and nucleic acids which in turn manifests several human diseases. The present study was aimed to evaluate the amending effect of 70% methanol extract of Hemidesmus indicus root (HIME) on iron overload induced liver injury. Iron overload was induced by intraperitoneal administration of iron-dextran into mice. Mice administered with different doses (50, 100 and 200 mg kg body weight) showed significant decrease in liver iron, serum ferritin and serum enzyme levels, along with decrease of lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and collagen content. In addition, the extract effectively induced the antioxidant enzyme levels and also exhibited the potential activity of reductive release of ferritin iron. The ameliorating effect of HIME on damaged liver was furthermore supported by the histopathological studies that showed improved histological appearance which demonstrates HIME as a valuable traditional healer against iron induced liver toxicity.

AIM: This study was conducted to study the hepatoprotective property of Hemidesmus indicus (L.) R.Br. roots. METHODS: Hepatoprotective properties of the methanol extract of the roots of H. indicus var. pubescens were evaluated on paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity. Hepatotoxicity was induced in albino Wistar rats by the administration of paracetamol (1g/kg), p.o. for 7 days. Methanol extract of...

The aqueous extract of Hemidesmus indicus roots was investigated for its in vivo antigenotoxic effect against cisplatin-induced cytogenetic damage. Swiss albino mice were administered with various doses of the extract either singly (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) or as split doses (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg bw/day) for five consecutive days by oral gavage. As endpoints, chromosome aberrations, mi...

Background: Radiotherapy is the main modality of cancer treatment. There are many chemical radioprotectors which unfortunately have lethal or toxic effect. Therefore the search is on to find out natural plant based radioprotectors. A well known medicinal plant, which is more acceptable to the body, Tinospora cordifolia, was tested in animal tissues against gamma radiations. Radioprotectiv...
